7 Goalkeeper Drills to Improve Reactions and Handling

Strong goalkeeping is built through consistent, purposeful training. Reaction speed is important, but a goalkeeper must also develop footwork, positioning, handling and the ability to reset quickly after every action.

Here are seven practical drills you can add to your goalkeeper training routine.

1. Wall Rebound Catches

Stand a short distance from a solid wall and throw the ball against it at different heights and angles. Catch the rebound with secure hands and bring the ball under control.

Change the speed and direction of each throw to make the rebounds less predictable.

Focus: Reactions, hand position and clean catching.

2. Tennis-Ball Reaction Drill

Ask a partner to stand in front of you while holding two tennis balls. The partner randomly drops one ball, and you must react quickly to catch it before the second bounce.

Increase the difficulty by changing your starting position or using colour-based commands.

Focus: Hand-eye coordination and reaction speed.

3. Quick-Foot Set Drill

Place two cones a short distance apart. Move quickly between them, then respond to a shot or thrown ball from your coach.

Before the ball arrives, bring your feet into a balanced set position. Avoid crossing your legs unnecessarily.

Focus: Footwork, balance and preparation.

4. Collapse-Dive Technique

Begin in a balanced goalkeeper stance. Ask a partner to roll the ball toward either side of your body. Step toward the ball, lower your body and complete a controlled collapse dive.

Start slowly and prioritise safe technique before increasing the speed.

Focus: Low saves, body shape and ball security.

5. Rapid Recovery Saves

Make an initial save, recover to your feet and immediately move into position for a second attempt.

The second ball should arrive from a different angle so that you must reset your feet and body quickly.

Focus: Recovery speed, concentration and second actions.

6. High-Ball Footwork Drill

Start near the centre of the goal while a coach serves the ball into different areas. Move into the ball’s path, communicate clearly and collect it at the safest available point.

Work on timing and controlled movement rather than rushing toward every delivery.

Focus: High-ball handling, timing and communication.

7. Save-to-Distribution Drill

After completing a save, quickly scan the field and distribute the ball toward a target area. Alternate between throws, rolls and passes based on the situation.

Focus: Decision-making and transition from defence to attack.

Train With Quality and Purpose

Complete each drill with proper technique and suitable rest. Warm up before diving, use a safe training surface and work with a qualified coach whenever possible.

Consistent, focused repetitions will help you carry better habits into competitive matches.
